Master Fung was a Xiaolin Master. He often made the four Dragons do very difficult tasks encouraging teamwork; in one teamwork exercise, he gave the monks the task to pull a huge rock up a cliff.[1]. He lived in the Xiaolin Temple alongside Dojo and an orphan monk and the dragon of water named Omi prior to the series until Raimundo Pedrosa, Kimiko Tohomiko and Clay Bailey arrived as the three other monks to become the dragon of wind, the dragon of fire and the dragon of earth respectively. He was sometimes seen meditating with other members of the Temple. He taught the Monks on a daily basis and acted as their mentor. He was also known for using sayings that no one else understood (not even Dojo).
Personality[]
Master Fung always offered guidance with confusing phrases to the monks, though he was rarely ever direct, usually speaking in metaphors or guidelines. He accepted the ways of things, and hardly ever battled unless absolutely necessary, though when he did fight he was rarely matched by his opponents, even when incapacitated in a wheelchair after being brought back from the Ying-Yang World. Master Fung was very wise and knew things about the young monks they did not even discover about themselves, but often set them up for ways to discover these for themselves. Despite being an aged Xiaolin Monk, he was not ignorant of the outside world, and was at times showed awareness and appreciation of modern conveniences.
While he was very serious most of the time, he had been known to crack jokes at the expense of his students. He rarely ever showed a loss of control, only showing panic in the most dire of situations, such as when Mala Mala Jong became active. While normally a very patient man, Master Fung's patience was at times tested by the habits and eccentries of his students, which he would often punish through chores or difficult lessons.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Cloud Transportation: He could use the clouds as a form of transportation or teleportation, able to disappear behind them and appear at any place he wanted, or simply ride them to transport himself.
- Telepathetic Cloud: He could create a telepathetic cloud that could turn his thoughts into pictures.
Abilities[]
- Master Martial Artist: He was an exceptional martial artist, and he passed his knowledge to the Xiaolin Monks. He was able to defeat all the monks at the same time and almost overcome Mala Mala Jong and Chase Young by using his martial arts.
Relationships[]
The Monks[]
Master Fung was the monks' Xiaolin teacher and benefactor. While he viewed them as close as his own children, he was particularly close to Omi, as he had helped raise the orphen monk since infancy.
Dojo[]
Master Fung and Dojo Kanojo Cho are very close, and are rarely apart from one another. Fung often relies on Dojo's assistance in everyday activities, such as training or Shen Gong Wu hunting, while also acting as his closest personal confidant. Dojo in turn shows a deep reverance and personal affection for Master Fung, often to the point of the latter's frustration as he can grow quite jealous and possessive at times.
Master Fung and Dojo's relationship resembles the one shared by the latter and Grand Master Dashi during his lifetime, implying Dojo often grows close to whoever maintains the position of Grand Master.
Episode Appearances[]
Physical Appearance[]
Master Fung was a bald man with a mustache and a goatee, that had long thick eyebrows. He wore a white shirt under a short-sleeve blue shirt that he wore open, revealing a medallion around his neck in between the shirt. Over his white shirt he had three curly chest hairs near his neck.
In Xiaolin Chronicles, Master Fung's design was largely unchanged, although his goatee had grown considerably longer.
Trivia[]
- Master Fung was voiced by René Auberjonois in the first season of Xiaolin Showdown. From season 2-onwards, he was voiced by Maurice LeMarche, making him the only major character in the show to be recast. In Xiaolin Chronicles, he was voiced by Michael Donovan.
- It is sometimes suggested that Master Fung's sayings and teachings are not his own, but taken from prewritten documents (either a desk calender or stored file), although this is typically presented as a joke.
